Orihuela is the historical capital of the so-called Vega Baja del Segura14 which corresponds to the Geographical Zone of the Huerta de Orihuela, the most important irrigated area in the province of Alicante, with more than 360,000 inhabitants and which owes its wealth to the waters of the Segura which fertilise the huerta of Orihuela.
The city has suffered for many years from the devastating floods of this river (1651, 1879, 1946, 1973, 1987) so it had to be channelled and had not overflowed since 1989, but after the cold drops of 2016, and especially 2019, it overflowed into the city.
The extensive municipality of Orihuela (as a result of its historical capital) is, as already mentioned, the largest municipality in the province of Alicante and the second largest in the Valencian Community (after Requena). It has several well-defined areas, which are the city, the huerta (market garden) – where numerous districts are scattered – and the coast with 18 km of coastline with excellent beaches, coves and cliffs: Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig, La Zenia and Dehesa de Campoamor.
Thus, its coastal area forms a tourist centre together with Torrevieja, Pilar de la Horadada and Guardamar del Segura15.
